Golf tournament planned to raise money for Karen Estes' brain tumor battle
Submitted by DWF Staff on Mon, 08/03/2009 - 09:09The friends and supporters of Wake Forest resident Karen Estes are joining forces to help raise money to assist her battle with a brain tumor. They are hosting a charity golf tournament and benefit in her honor on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 9 a.m. at the Wil-Mar Country Club.
Almost exactly a year ago, Karen Estes was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Shortly after being diagnosed, she began treatment at Duke Medical Center. Karen had major surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible followed by six and half weeks of radiation and 4 rounds of chemo.
Following each round of chemo Karen was required to stay in Durham for several weeks to be near the hospital until her counts were healthy enough to return home. Karen is currently on numerous prescriptions including an oral chemo to continue to fight this ugly word we all know as cancer. As you can imagine, the costs associated with her medical care have risen to astronomical levels.
Wake Forest resident gives behind-the-scenes look at RBC Center in his blog
Submitted by DWF Staff on Tue, 07/28/2009 - 10:10If you've ever been at the RBC Center to watch a Carolina Hurricanes or NC State basketball game and wondered what goes into powering the scoreboard and screen over center ice and the "ribbon" that runs around the arena just below the balcony seats, then check out Canes Vision HD ( @CVHD ). It's a blog by Stephen R., a Wake Forest resident, who has been chronicling the changes to the RBC Center's in-house communication systems.
If you hadn't heard, the scoreboard and monitor display (there's probably a better term for it) over center ice was was replaced this summer along with major server upgrades.
This blog will most likely interest any 'Canes fan, but it will also be cool for "geeks" who can get detailed looks at the guts of the video, graphics, and sound operations of the RBC Center. There's tons of photos going back to the beginning of this project. It's definitely one worth bookmarking or adding to your RSS reader.
